At 2,240 metres in the Nilgiris, Ooty is one of the most accessible high-altitude escapes in South India. It's known for its tea estates, the Government Botanical Gardens, and the UNESCO-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway that winds up from Mettupalayam. October to June is the best time to visit — it’s cooler, clearer, and less wet. From Bangalore, direct overnight buses take around 8 hours; from Chennai, the journey is roughly 10–12 hours with a change.

Sakleshpur, Karnataka

About 220 km from Bangalore in the Western Ghats, Sakleshpur is coffee and cardamom country. The 18th-century Manjarabad Fort (a star-shaped fort built by Tipu Sultan) and the partially submerged Shettihalli Rosary Church are the two standout stops. October to February is peak season; the monsoon turns the ghats intensely green but the roads get slippery. Direct buses from Bangalore take around 5 hours.

Munnar, Kerala

Munnar sits at the confluence of three mountain streams in the Idukki district of Kerala — which is where the name comes from (mun = three, ar = river in Malayalam). At around 1,600 metres, it's all rolling tea gardens, cool mist, and quiet mornings. September to March is the sweet spot for visits. Direct buses run from Kochi in about 4 to 4.5 hours and from Coimbatore in around 5–6 hours, both through scenic Western Ghats routes.

Wayanad is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve with dense forest, wildlife, and ancient rock history. Must-visits include the Edakkal Caves that have petroglyphs dating back over 6,000 years and Chembra Peak known for a heart-shaped lake near its summit. October to May is the best window. Direct buses run from Bangalore to Kalpetta and Sultan Bathery in around 6–7 hours, with both KSRTCs and private operators on the route.
