Whether you're in Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, or Guwahati, East India has mountain destinations that are genuinely underexplored and completely worth the journey by road. These four are a good place to start.
Koraput, Odisha

Tucked into the southern edge of the Eastern Ghats, Koraput is a high-altitude district with coffee plantations, tribal villages, dense forests, and Deomali - the highest peak in Odisha at 1,672 metres. What sets it apart isn't just the landscape, but the cultural depth: several Adivasi communities live here, and their festivals, markets, and traditions are very much part of the experience. October to March is the best season: the air is cool, the waterfalls are still flowing, and the trekking trails are dry. Overnight buses run from both Bhubaneswar (roughly 8–10 hours).
What to see: Deomali Peak · Duduma Waterfall · Kolab Reservoir · Tribal Museum, Koraput · Sabara Srikhetra Temple

Shillong, Meghalaya

The capital of Meghalaya sits at 1,525 metres in the Khasi Hills and is known for its rolling green highlands, cool mist, and colonial-era architecture. It's one of the most accessible hill towns in the Northeast: regular buses run from Guwahati in about 3–4 hours via NH-51. From Kolkata, the practical route is an overnight bus or train to Guwahati, then a connecting bus to Shillong. March to June and September to November are the best months; the monsoon (July–August) brings heavy rainfall and landslide risk on the ghat roads.
What to see: Elephant Falls · Ward's Lake · Shillong Peak · Don Bosco Museum · Mawlynnong Village (cleanest village in Asia, 90 km from Shillong)

Gangtok, Sikkim

Sikkim's capital is a compact hill city perched at 1,650 metres in the Eastern Himalayas with Buddhist monasteries, prayer flags, and views of Kanchenjunga on a clear day. It's one of the most well-connected hill capitals in the country. Direct buses from Siliguri (the gateway to the hills) take about 4.5–5 hours, run by Sikkim Nationalised Transport (SNT) and private operators. If you're coming from Kolkata, an overnight bus or train to Siliguri (~12 hours) followed by a morning bus to Gangtok is the standard route. March to May and October to mid-December are the best windows.
What to see: Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake) · Rumtek Monastery · Nathula Pass (permit required) · MG Marg · Namgyal Institute of Tibetology

Darjeeling, West Bengal

At 2,050 metres in the Eastern Himalayas, Darjeeling is tea country with endless gardens, colonial charm, and sunrise views of Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill that people plan entire trips around. The UNESCO-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (the Toy Train) is reason enough to make the journey. Buses from Siliguri take 3–4 hours, (Siliguri is an overnight bus ride from Kolkata). March to June and October to November are the sweetest months for clear skies and mountain visibility.
What to see: Tiger Hill sunrise · Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Toy Train) · Batasia Loop · Happy Valley Tea Estate · Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (Red Panda sanctuary)
