Planning a mountain escape from Delhi, Chandigarh, or Jaipur? These four Himalayan destinations are all reachable by bus - no flights needed!
Manali, Himachal Pradesh

Manali sits at 2,050 metres at the northern end of the Kullu Valley, framed by the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar mountain ranges. It's as close to a year-round destination as the Himalayas get with green valleys and river trails in summer, heavy snowfall and ski slopes in winter. October to February is peak snow season, while March to June is better if you want clearer roads and a quieter town. Direct overnight buses from Delhi take around 12–14 hours via Chandigarh, Mandi, and Kullu — HRTC and private Volvo operators both cover the route daily.
What to see: Hadimba Devi Temple · Solang Valley · Old Manali · Rohtang Pass (seasonal) · Atal Tunnel & Sissu

Bir, Himachal Pradesh

A small village in the Kangra Valley, Bir is the paragliding capital of India — and one of the top paragliding sites in the world. The take-off point at Billing sits at 2,400 metres, with thermal currents that attract solo pilots from across the globe. Beyond paragliding, it has a laid-back Tibetan quarter with monasteries, cafes, and a pace of life that's hard to find elsewhere in Himachal. October to June is the best window; paragliding shuts down from mid-July to mid-September during monsoon. Direct overnight buses from Delhi reach Bir in around 12–13 hours; from Chandigarh, it's about 7–8 hours.
What to see: Billing (paragliding take-off point) · Chokling Monastery · Tibetan Colony · Bir to Billing Trek · Gunehar Waterfall

Auli, Uttarakhand

At 2,800 metres in the Chamoli district, Auli is India's most well-known ski destination — with runs overlooking Nanda Devi and some of the most dramatic mountain backdrops in the country. December to February is skiing season; March to June is better for meadow walks and ropeway rides in clear weather. The journey from Delhi involves an overnight bus to Rishikesh (~6 hours), then a road leg to Joshimath (~8–9 hours), from where Auli is 16 km up — either by road or on one of Asia's longest ropeways. It's a longer trip than the others on this list, but the views from the top justify the journey.
What to see: Auli Ropeway · Gorson Bugyal · Auli Artificial Lake · Joshimath · Valley of Flowers (accessible in summer from nearby)

Nainital, Uttarakhand

Built around the emerald Naini Lake in the Kumaon Himalayas, Nainital is one of the most accessible mountain towns from Delhi — just 300 km and 8 hours by bus, making it a genuine weekend option. It's a town with an old-world hill charm: lakeside walks, cable cars to viewpoints, and quiet cafes tucked into the slopes. March to June and October to November are the sweet spots; the winter months bring occasional snowfall and a different, quieter character to the town. Volvo sleeper buses run overnight from ISBT Kashmiri Gate and Anand Vihar, dropping you at Mall Road by morning.
What to see: Naini Lake · Snow View Point · Naina Devi Temple · Tiffin Top · Eco Cave Gardens
